Georgia Macon Mission

Office Specialists

Trips

Early in 2016, after failing at several attempts to build a new house, Dorothy said, "Let's go on a mission." I said, "OK."

I writing this on Christmas Eve at the kitchen table in my oldest daughter home in Riverside, CA. In less than two weeks, on January 2, 2017, we report to the MTC in Provo, UT for training to be office specialists in the Georgia Macon Mission until December, 2018. Let me tell you what's happened since she said, "Let's go on a mission." and now.

We told Bishop Zerbe (Lancaster Ward, Lancaster, PA) of our desire and he got us into the LDS missionary application form online. Simple form. Getting everything done to complete the form. Not so simple. Doctors' appointments. Dentists' appointments. Colonoscopies. Stress tests. Shots. Medical forms of every sort. Discussions with our financial advisor. Finally, five months later we submitted the application.

We had had ongoing discussions about what to do with our stuff accumulated over 50 years of marriage: furniture, pots and pans, dishes, tableware, clothes, tchotchkes of every sort, a fossil collection started in 1954, quilting and other fabric, geneology records, area rugs, computer equipment, a car, etc., etc., etc. None of it of sufficient value to justify storing at $200+ a month for 24 months.

We decided to divest ourselves of all but personal items, the fossil collection, American Indian rugs and pots, the geneology records, and adequate things to start over in two years, wherever that might be. Simple? Yeah? A complicating factor: Dorothy wanted to see all 27 grandchildren before we left.

In October I sent Claire photos of all of the furniture and said, "Pick." She and Matt had just purchase a house. She picked and offered one their three garages as storage space. Rent truck. Fill with stuff. Drive to Lafayette, IN. Spent the several day in late October with Matt, Claire, Theo and Luc. See some pictures here.

In November we went to Connecticut to participate in Connor's baptism. Spent the weekend with Tim, Sarah, Caleb, Adele, Adian, Connor, Jacob, and Rhegan. See some pictures here.

December 5th held a garage sale. First customer showed up December 4th claiming to have misread the date. Next customer at 7:10 AM, 50 minutes early. She stole a small bottle of perfume. Crowds for the next three hours. Cop came to say neighbor complained about cars parked in the cul de sac. Said just keep an eye on it. By 9:30 crowds disappear. Netted $900.

In the meantime, we decided to replace the 2011 Buick with 100,000+ miles on the odometer with something that would, with our advancing decrepitude, be easier to get in and out of. Purchased a 2017 Subaru Outpack.

December 15, fly to Warsaw for a long weekend with our oldest son's family in Poland. (I know that sound pretentious but it's fun to say anyway: "fly to Poland for a long weekend.") Go to the old parts of Warsaw and the Wieliczka salt mine and market in Krakow. See some pictures here. While we are gone to Krakow, Matt's schnauzer got out and opened all of the Christmas presents under the tree. The flight home was long: Missed the Frankfurt to Philadelpia flight and had to go to Houston then take a Houston to Philadelpia flight. Total travel time Warsaw to Lancaster: twenty six and a half hours.

Final goodbys to the balance of the grandchildren, Ezra, Enoch, Josey, Anna, Ben, Tabitha, Phebe, and Mary and storage of the balance of the stuff in Abby's garage.

Disconnect the phone, the internet, the water, the gas and the electric. Put out many bags for the garbage truck on Thursday, December 22.

Load the Subaru with the clothing, laptop, camera, tax records that will be our stuff for the next two years. Park the Subaru in Greg and Sara's garage taking what we need for the next three and a half weeks.

Fly to California to spend Christmas with Amy, Stan, Summer and Jake, Heather, Gwen, Kelly, Michael and Naomi. We'll see Rachel and Jason while we're in Provo. See some pictures here.

Preparation complete. Saw the grandchildren save one, Ryan. Dumped the stuff. Off to the mission field. A whirlwind, but accomplished everything necessary with the help and support of our family and dear friends.

Here is a table of the places we visited between October,2016 and when we reported to the mission home in Georgia in January, 2017:
