Columbus, NM

In 1916, Pancho Villa attack Columbus, NM killing several people. In response, the US sent General John Pershing into Mexico chasing Villa. Our interest is the fact that Harold Thompson, my father-in-law, who had lied about his age and joined the army, was part of that expedition.

Motorized vehiles and airplaines were first used by the US Army in this raid. There a state park in Columbus about the raid.

This Dodge was used by a family to escape Villa's attack. The husband was wounded (Note the bullet holes in the firewall.) and the wife, driving for the first time, got them out of town.

Here are the uniform and other personal items of Pershing's soldiers.
